Notice on MID SEMESTER EXAM - URGENT!

Dear all, announcement from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Dan Jantan has been made through email to all students.

Importantly, the Mid-semester exam has been re-schedule from 15 August to 19 July, 2009 starting at 9:00am. The Mid-semester examination will be an open book and open note type. Dr. Mohd Dan Jantan noted that the plus side of this early exam is that we will be able to get our result on August 15, otherwise we will not know our standing (or "carry-marks") before we sit for our final examination.

1.0 COURSE DESCRIPTION
Briefly, the course is an application of basic economic theories (microeconomics and macroeconomics theories) to modern-day world economic problems and their solutions. It includes:
a) presentation of economic principles and concepts as related to the real world, and
b) case applications that enhance real world applicability.

2.0 COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course aims to:
  1. review the foundations of economics which are fundamental to economic applications;
  2. provide an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics in relation to markets, consumers, businesses, industrial organizations, role of government in resource allocation and income distribution, money, public finance, national income, inflation, unemployment, and stabilization policies;
  3. present and discuss global economic issues e.g. international trade, balance of payments, exchange rate, and the problems of less-developed countries.
3.0 COURSE CONTENT:

4.0 COURSE EVALUATION:
Each participant will be graded as follows:
i. Assignments: 40%

1.0 SYNOPSIS
Since its introduction about half a century ago, strategic management has been accepted both as a field of study and good business practice. Strategic management is considered by most management theorists and practitioners as the most important process since it assists organizations to formulate and implement effective strategies to assist them in the successful management of their business.

This course emphasizes on helping students to understand and undertake strategic management process in a systematic manner, particularly in identifying and developing effective strategies to improve organizational performance. The course focuses sufficient familiarity with its evolution, context, approaches, theories, and the important components of the strategic management process. In doing so it is hoped that the course will be equip students with the background knowledge, tools, and techniques necessary to understand, analyze and develop effective strategies in order to effectively charter an organization in the right direction based on its vision and mission.

2.0 COURSE OBJECTIVES
  • The understand how business success is linked to the strategic management process.
  • Understand the context, approaches and theories in strategic management.
  • Gain an increased understanding of the role of formulation, implementation, evaluation, and control of strategy in the strategic management process.
  • Learn the analytical tools for analyzing the business environment.
  • Undertake the industry, competitive and company situation analysis.
  • Undertake the process of strategy formulation.
  • Undertake the process of strategy implementation.
  • Undertake the process strategy evaluation and control.

Each participant will be graded as follows:
i. Group presentation: 15%
ii. Group assignment: 15%
iii. Individual research paper: 30%

5.0 INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD:
The course topics are presented in a variety of ways such as lecturers and small group case studies discussions. As this course is conducted at the graduate level, participants are highly encouraged and expected to take active part in class discussion, case studies, and presentations.
